I love how these moments are both about need and yet they’re so different as to be almost opposites.
We need your help.
I need you.
And the difference in blocking and framing — in the first one, Cas is facing away, refusing to engage. He doesn’t want to be Dean’s hammer. Cas is framed by Meg and Dean (and Sam on the other side of Dean — you can’t see him in this crop but he’s there in the full shot) but he’s focusing on the Word of God. Dean is imploring, his arms opening, but Cas doesn’t see. Right before this part of the scene, Cas hugs Dean (and Sam) and Dean can’t handle it — both Sam and Dean are uncomfortable with this display of affection.
Then the second one — Dean looks Cas right in the eyes. It is only about the two of them. Benny is there but is so often framed completely out of the shot (and certainly is for this section). Dean’s arms are open again, offering himself, but Cas faces him this time.
Pure, that’s what Dean said Purgatory was, and it did help purify him. Refine him. Took him from a dishonest expression — we need your help, like it was all about business and like the connection between Dean and Cas was no greater than the connection between Cas and everyone else — into something more simple and honest. In Purgatory, Dean can hug Cas, can touch him on the cheek, can show honest affection.
Dean has spent months praying to Cas. Every night, he prayed. I’m going to guess that those prayers started out complicated and muddied and full of the distancing words that Dean has frequently used with Cas. But each night he would pray to Cas and each night, the prayers would get simpler. More honest. Until it was what we saw when he finally found Cas again.
We‘re getting out of here. We‘re going home.
That’s what was in Dean’s heart when he told Benny they weren’t heading for the exit until they found the angel. That’s what was in Dean’s heart every time that he hurt someone in order to bring himself one step closer to Cas.
Simple. Pure.
I’m not leaving here without you.
I need you.
